The Matron (Mrs. Pearson) is, in fact, doing
the duties of Matron Superintendent.
She is in entire
charge, under my supervision on periodical visits, and holds a position of considerable responsibility.
For
this she can reach a maximum salary of slightly less
that £98 a year. I feel ashamed to hold her responsible for the proper conduct of the prison at such a rate of
pay.
I recommend, for your consideration, that the
salaries of the Wardress Staff of the Female Prison
should be amended in the 1939 Estimates as follows:
$2,400 to $3,600 by $200 annually.
Assistant Matron $1,500 to $1,800 by $50
Matron
annually.
Principal Wardress - $1,200 to $1,500 by $50
annually.
Wardresses - $720 to $960 by $30 annually.
I invite your attention to the salaries
payable to Mental Nurses, Charge Nurses, and Staff
Nurses of the Medical Departments.
(Sd.) J.L. Willcocks. Commissioner of Prisons.
6th September, 1938.
